Expert Review:
The LG BD640 may come across as a bit basic, but this model features online content streaming capabilities at an extremely low price. Although LG's excellent Smart TV is not available with the BD640, major services such as Netflix, YouTube, CinemaNow, and Vudu are represented. LG markets the BD640 as 'Wi-Fi Ready' - keep in mind that this does not refer to 'integrated Wi-Fi'. Rather, this Blu-ray player supports add-on Wi-Fi functionality by plugging in the included USB adapter. Unfortunately, this forces you to choose between connecting the Wi-Fi adapter or a USB-based storage device, as the BD640 has only a single front-mounted USB port. Still, the primary function of the BD640 is to play Blu-ray discs at an affordable price. This is something it does very well, with excellent video and audio quality with Blu-ray discs - no 'for the price' qualifier needed. Initial load times and navigation speed are not overly impressive, but LG makes up for this by offering a smartphone app that can turn your phone into a wireless remote control for the BD640. This Blu-ray player is an excellent choice if you need one for a second room, or as a backup if you already own a device like the Sony PlayStation 3.
If you would prefer to save some money and leave out the Wi-Fi functionality, LG offers the BD630 for a lower entry price.
